Mozelle Baker Johnson

Mozelle Baker Johnson, born Thursday, December 21, 1933, to Delice and Lillian Baker in Pike County, Mississippi, passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends. A devoted daughter, cherished sister, and a beloved aunt, cousin and friend to many. Mozelle lived a life defined by quiet strength, selflessness, steady kindness, an an unfailing devotion to those she loved.

Life and Family

Shortly after graduating from Southern University, Mozelle moved to New York and worked at Eastern Airlines for a number of years. She met Carl Johnson (husband) at a Christmas party and the following day he presented her with pastries. The presentation of those pastries blossomed into dating for more than two (2) years. Mozelle and Carl married at New York City Hall on June 6, 1961. A union that lasted more than 59 years.

Mozelle and Carl built a life together rooted in partnership, family, a love of travel and the arts. They eventually welcomed their two (2) children Brian Johnson and Carla Johnson, and many years later celebrated the arrival of grandchildren Morgan Brathwaite and Austin Johnson, who brought them great joy. Mozelle supported Carl's career with steadfast commitment, moving the family across the country while always keeping home as a place of warmth and stability. Her home was a gathering place where you were welcomed with open arms, stories and knowledge were shared, meals were savored, and friends and family connected.

Mozelle can be described as a faithful servant, a dutiful wife, an exceptional mother and grandmother, a cherished aunt and cousin, and a loyal friend. She also embodied what it means to be a lady - not only in impeccable appearance but in purpose, character, and dignity. Her elegance was expressed through compassion, quiet generosity, strength, and wisdom.

Mozelle is lovingly survived by: Brian Johnson (son) and his spouse Rhonda Johnson; Carla Johnson (daughter); Morgan Brathwaite (granddaughter); Austin Johnson (grandson); Lenell Baker, Sr., Robert and Cecelie Johnson (brother and sister-in-law); Christina "Tina" Johnson (sister-in-law); and an abundance of loving and caring cousins, nieces, nephews, family members and friends who will carry her memory forward.

The family extends special thanks to Lisa Johnson and Gezerelda Ayodele for their love and support.
