Meet Zakiyah A. Lewis-Muhammad, FDFCC

Zakiyah A. Lewis-Muhammad is a Licensed Funeral Director, Compassionate Community
Leader, Wife, Mother of Six, Grandmother of Twenty-Five, Co-Owner and Funeral Director In
Full and Continuous Charge, of Eppinger & Lewis Funeral Home, LLC in the City of Stone
Mountain, Georgia.
Originally from Queens Village, New York, Zakiyah’s life journey is a testimony of faith,
perseverance, courage, and purpose. Her path into funeral service was not one built solely
through education and professional experience, but through life itself — through resilience,
healing, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.
More than two decades ago, Zakiyah made the courageous decision to leave an abusive marriage
of 11 years, in California, boarding a Greyhound bus to Atlanta with her six young children,
ranging in age from just fifteen months to ten years old. With faith in God and determination to
build a better future for her family, she began rebuilding her life from the ground up.
Never imagining where that journey would lead, Zakiyah would later graduate from Gupton-
Jones College of Funeral Service in 2011, where she stood as the only Muslim student in her
class. Shortly after entering the profession, she became the first and only Muslim woman
licensed as a funeral director in the State of Georgia.
Her dedication, professionalism, and leadership eventually led her to work for and manage the
Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home – Riverdale Chapel, one of the biggest and most respected
Black-owned funeral homes in Atlanta. During her 10 years of service, she compassionately
guided countless families through some of life’s most difficult moments while developing a
reputation for excellence, empathy, dignity, and integrity.
In January 2025, through faith, sacrifice, and perseverance, Zakiyah became the first
foundational Black American Muslim Woman to own a funeral home in the State of Georgia
through the co-founding of Eppinger & Lewis Funeral Home, LLC.
Today, her mission extends far beyond funeral service. Zakiyah believes caring for families is a
sacred calling — one rooted in compassion, service, healing, and human connection. She is
especially passionate about serving diverse communities with culturally respectful and faith-
honoring care, including Islamic Janazah services and end-of-life guidance.
For Zakiyah, funeral service is not simply a profession — it is purpose.
She believes every life deserves to be honored with dignity, every family deserves compassion,
and every person deserves to be treated with kindness during moments of grief and transition.
Through her leadership at Eppinger & Lewis Funeral Home, LLC, Zakiyah remains committed
to serving families throughout the City of Stone Mountain and surrounding communities with
excellence, grace, compassion, and care

“Service to others is what gives me purpose. It is what soothes my soul.”
